Desi Punch

Meet everyone’s favourite- Aam Panna a.k.a Desi Punch. A classic summer drink made from raw mangoes that are abundantly available in India during the summer months. Every Indian household has its own recipe to make this signature drink. These recipes have been passed down from generation to generation.

It has been found that the earliest mentions of Aam Panna have been in Kalidasa’s writings.

Myth: Aam Panna causes acidity

Fact: Aam Panna does not cause acidity, instead it has a soothing effect

Aam Panna is made by roasting raw mangoes and blending them to get a pulp. The raw mango pulp is then blended with mint, cumin, salt, and sugar. Add water to this mixture and your Desi Punch is ready.

But, how does this drink give that soothing effect?

Research has shown that mango pulp is a good source of many micro and macronutrients such as Calcium, Potassium, Sodium, Iron, and Zinc, to name a few. All these minerals help in maintaining electrolyte balance in the body. It also has citric, oxalic and malic acids. Moreover, the ability of mango pulp to retain all these nutrients and bioactive compounds is what makes it such a power-packed drink.

So, this desi punch can actually pack a punch (of nutrients)!

Ruby Refresher

Next, we have Kokum, a.k.a., Ruby Refresher. Kokum is a traditional summer drink from the coastal regions of India.

Myth: Kokum drink is only for weight loss

Fact: While Kokum does contain ingredients that aid weight loss, it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties

Garcinia Indica, the Kokum tree, is native to tropical regions and there are about 35 species found in India. The fruit from the Kokum tree is used to make this drink. It is deep purple in colour due to the presence of chemicals called anthocyanins. These anthocyanins have antioxidant properties.

The tangy flavour of Kokum comes from Hydroxycitric acid- an inhibitor of fat and cholesterol synthesis.

But, how is this drink prepared?

It is pretty simple. The Kokum fruit is soaked in water and then mixed with sugar and salt to create a cooling and refreshing drink that helps prevent sunstroke.

So, there you have it. The sweet and tangy Ruby Refresher is truly a gem of a drink!

Nostalgia Overdose

A staple in the north, as well as south India, is Chhach or Nostalgia Overdose. This drink offers a soothing feel and can be consumed plain, seasoned with species.

Myth: Chhach is not suitable for those with lactose-intolerance

Fact: Chhach has bacteria that breakdown lactose and hence, those with lactose intolerance can also consume it

It is traditionally prepared in earthen pots by mixing yoghurt with water, salt and adding spices such as cumin and coriander.

Chhach is not only a refreshing drink but is also a great source of probiotics that promote good gut health and boost immunity.

It is also a rich source of calcium and iron while having a low-fat content along with nutrients like vitamins A, B, and C.

Natural Bliss

Last but not least, Sattu or Natural Bliss. It is a traditional summer drink from the eastern parts of India, made by roasting and grinding gram flour (chickpea flour.)

Myth: Sattu should not be consumed during hot summer days

Fact: Sattu should definitely be consumed during hot summer days

The flour is mixed with water, mint and lemon juice to create a refreshing drink that is high in protein and fibre. Sattu helps keep the body cool and hydrated and is a great energy booster during the hot summer. This drink is made with the least amount of processing involved and hence, most of the beneficial nutrients stay intact. The addition of mint provides a cooling sensation due to the presence of menthol.

So, while Sattu provides energy, lemon and mint cool you down.

The Mixologist in Every Indian Household

When it comes to traditional drinks, every Indian household has its own mixology spin with respect to the ingredients added, the glasses the drinks are served in and so on. For instance, Chhach and Sattu are served in a kulhad. Another traditional beverage, lassi is served in tall copper glasses.

So, the next time you're seeking a delightful non-alcoholic drink, look no further. Experiment with the mixology spin and craft your own signature mocktails inspired by the rich flavours of India. Unleash your creativity, and explore the vast realm of Indian summer drinks like never before.
